Norway

This is the official site for the city of Egersund in Norway. It's developed by the local administration to distribute information about public services of the city to it's citizens. Also the site promotes the region as a place to visit and of course a place to settle.

The project demonstrates that governmental institutions indeed can save money and achieve excellent functionality and flexebility by the use of open source content management systems such as eZ Publish.

Egersund kommune's website uses eZ Publish's class-functionality to make online services such as telephone lists, service declarations, listings of local organizations/politicians and of course news articles.

The freedom of developing under an open source frameset like eZ Publish is breathtaking. No insanely expensive extra costs for simple changes in the solution, and best of all - a world wide online community offering both good advice and free contributions with extended functionality.

The challenge so far in this particular project, has been finding a good shared host provider, as the city of Egersund doesn't run it's own webserver. Good services exists in th US, but due to ping-times we found this solution to be too slow. Then again, european webhotels are overpriced and quite often overly restrictive when it
comes to SSH-access and privileges on server. Also the use of PHP accelerators is lacking in most cases.. Speed is usually an issue configuring your eZ-based website, so access to your own webserver is always an advantage.

Currently we're thinking of moving www.eigersund.no to a dedicated server...

We strongly recommend eZ Publish to other governmental institutions which have co-workers with some webprogramming skills. We've worked with eZ Systems for 9 months, and even visited them in Skien (Norway) participating a workshop there, and there is no doubt - the crew is professional and eZ Publish v.3.x is here to stay!

By the way, even though it's an open source product - eZ Systems offer commercial support for eZ Publish. Allways
good to know in case key-personnel leaves for a new job. :)
