The french National Gendarmerie has chosen eZ Publish as her main WCM platform, both for extranet and internet purposes. Though at project's earliest stage they've enjoyed consulting and technical services from SQLi, a french eZ business partner, most of the developments were carried out inhouse by the SIRPA, the communications and public relations service. We have had a talk with Jean-Luc Chassaing, in charge of conception and development at National Gendarmerie.
eZ : Can you tell us a bit more about National Gendarmerie and the goals for the website?
JLC : With this website, the National Gendarmerie had two main goals. The first one was to build a service oriented website. The content was focused on the questions people have when they visit our site. We give them answers threw FAQs, Articles or links to other websites. We also wanted to build a modern website making a large use of images and videos. The second goal was to make a complete and simple presentation of all the components of the National Gendarmerie and explain what we do. This website federates many sub-sites of important entities of the National Gendarmerie, like the GIGN or the Republican Guard for example. We also have two sub-sites dedicated to the young people and teenagers.
eZ : What version of eZ Publish do you use?
JLC : The website is actually using the 4.0.3 release of eZ Publish and we plan to migrate the site and all the sub-sites in 4.1.3 in the future months.
eZ : Is there any specific functionality in eZ Publish you needed for the project?
JLC : There is not really a specific functionality we use that could be mentioned here but we have made a large use of all the content management functionalities of eZ Publish like multi node publishing, objects relations for example.
eZ : Have you customized and extended your eZ Publish installation, if yes how?
JLC : We have build two specific extensions relying on the ezwebin extension. The main extension has all the design and modules needed for the main site. The second one has the specific design for the sub-sites.
eZ : How long did it take to prepare the site for launch JLC : The entire project took a year from making the first reflections on what could be this website up to now. The development of the main site took us about 3 months. But the site has been continuously evolving during the last months. We have build the sub-site extension fixed some bugs added some little functionalities.
eZ : Have you seen increase in traffic after launch?
JLC : We can't really compare this site to the previous as many things have changed from the design to the content But what we can say is that the traffic is increasing.
eZ : Do you have a support & maintenance agreement with eZ?
JLC : We don't have support and maintenance for the time being but we plan to have one as this website is growing and we have other website using eZ Publish.
eZ : Thank you for your time
