Here's a recap of the eZ Summit 2013:
Day one kicked off with a view from eZ System's CEO, Gabriele Viebach, who revealed the developments and plans that have advanced eZ Publish from a Web Content Management publishing software solution to a digital development platform that helps enterprises of all types to create unique digital experiences for the next generation of the web. She shared the success stories of recent eZ Publish projects at Mondadori, William Reed, John Deere, comScore, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, The French Nationally Assembly, Orkla group, Deutsche Bank and more. She concluded with Hybrid Delivery - eZ's unique offering of flexible delivery between a fully managed Ixonos and Red Hat cloud enabled service platform, a traditional on-premise environment or a mixture of both depending on the project need and phase. eZ today is cloud-primed and optimized for efficiency.
We learned from our VP Community, Nicolas Pastorino, and our CTO, Ralph Hünermann, what the roadmap for the next iteration will be. We discovered the next eZ mountain we climb is - Stetind - a mysterious rock up in Norway no less. (For newbies to eZ Systems every new version of eZ Publish we release has a mountain name - the present version being Kilimanjaro. Climbing is an exhilarating team sport and the view from the top is always rewarding!)
Our product management team of Christof Zahneissen and Roland Benedetti gave a rich show on the concept of User Experience in Web design and development in order to frame how and why eZ Publish is evolving the way it is - into a set of customer focused technologies that combined help enterprises transform for success. The climax of the morning was held by Live|Work's Melvin Brand Flu about "Service Design" in the age of user experience. Several use cases were highlighted and the audience reaction was highly appreciative. The timing seems right for eZ's stake holders to adopt newer disciplines and approaches to deliver the next generation of service-designed digital business.
The afternoon was dedicated to partners' and customers’ achievements. Themes covered a cross section of industries, from Sparda Bank's internal information management and employee experience to Mondadori's relaunch of fully responsive designed consumer publishing site www.grazia.fr, to a global content hub for a major pharmaceutical industry player. Flash talks from Fotoware, Kaliop, Open Content and Smile all brought rapid reflection and grins as our "flashers" gave Pecha Kucha presentations (20 slides, 20 seconds each!). They were all great sports and this is definitely something we'll reproduce for the upcoming eZ Events. Next came SensioLabs - the company behind the famous Symfony PHP framework. SensioLabs France and Germany were as one and enlightened the crowd with the power that the eZ & SensioLabs integration will bring today and in the future. Freedom of digital experience and design is upon us, as is a much enlarged community of developers to get us there!
Some magic then happened at the eZ Summit in Cologne. Only those attending will know what this means. Those that could not come this year will just have to live with the regret of never meeting Futurologist M. Pierre!

Day 2 started at top speed with a focus on multi-channel. A world premier showcasing HyperRoad Design's eZ Publish TV App on a Samsung Smart TV. eZ is now ready to push multimedia into the living room on the next generation of TV sets. This is disruptive and frankly very exciting. The barrier to entry to broadcasting on the big screen is now much lower. Let's all keep tabs on this one!
Chief Digital Officer, Catherine Devine from the American Museum of Natural History then demonstrated how eZ has become the hub for not only websites but apps and in-museum kiosks. Bridging the virtual with physical worlds for their significant global audience is now eZ powered. To wrap the conference on a crescendo Digital Director Yann Gourvennec’s presentation of Orange’s global roll-out of digital channels via their eZ Publish website factory concluded the cases that show the journey eZ has so far made beyond WCM towards being the User Experience Portal of choice for the next generation.
eZ UnConference next - our tech community will convene and ensure the eZ Publish Platform sails safe on the high seas. Watch this space....
